volunteering in worton

We would like to get as many of you as possible involved in your village. You don’t have to be a parish councillor to do this, just have a shared interest in making improvements to our local way of life. Here’s how you can help:

Footpaths: There is already a keen walking group which monitors the local footpaths and undertakes occasional minor maintenance and clearance work. During the year ahead there may be bigger undertakings such as replacing stiles and gates in conjunction with Wiltshire Council. Why not volunteer to help? More info here, and we will announce when help is needed.

Street-scene: Volunteers have already helped the Parish Council with things like making new village notice boards (our thanks to Mark Fisher for the first at Gaisford Chase) and tidying up sections of the High Street. During the year ahead there may be an opportunity to work with Wiltshire Council’s “Street-scene” projects. These help villages take an active part in improving their communities alongside their own specialist staff. Again, we will announce the details when available.

Community Speedwatch: Why not volunteer to help with the Worton Community Speedwatch group? There is an active and enthusiastic group in the village who undertake frequent monitoring sessions. More info here or call 01380 730564 to find out more.

Village Hall: The Village Hall is a vital asset to Worton and Marston. Its day-to-day running, maintenance and long term future are very important. So why not volunteer to help in some way? Why not join the 200 club or if you run a society or club then book the hall for your activities.

Clubs and societies: There are a range of interesting clubs and groups in the village, such as the Link Scheme, Garden club, Ladies group and football club. Why not get involved; you may have skills which could be needed!

Other village assets: The Rose and Crown is also a village asset. Various groups meet there such as Knit and Natt charity fundraisers, skittles, WI, crib and the walking group. The same message applies as it does to the Village Hall: Use it or lose it!

The Bridge: The Bridge is a very informative and eagerly read magazine. Are you using it to its full potential? If you’ve got something important to communicate then use The Bridge. And if you know friends and neighbours who do not get it, then why not encourage them to subscribe!

Worton website: Worton now has an active website. If you need to know something fast about the local community, it’s the instantaneous way to communicate your message! There’s the interactive ‘Gossip Corner’, a Billboard and What’s On as well as Community Safety advice. And, as we said in last month’s magazine, if you would like help getting started on a computer and going online then contact us and we can help.

The Parish Council: Last but not least – come along to our meetings on the first Monday of every month (except August) at 7.30pm in The Village Hall to see and hear what’s happening around you – current work includes providing more public seating and liaising with landowners to clear ditches and watercourses to improve water runoff. More on the website and the High Street Notice Board.
